My name is Christy and I am currently a junior at the University of Texas at Austin, majoring in Chemistry/Pre-pharmacy. Since I became a college student, my vacations and breaks have been filled with summer courses and volunteering. This summer, I decided that I want to try something new- a road trip. My definition of road trip is a break from one’s daily life to experience new things in a planned yet flexible schedule. As a matter of fact, a road trip itself is a new thing for me. I am very excited about what this trip will offer me.
My rough plan is to start in Austin, TX and end in Boston, MA. I decided to make Boston as my final destination, because there are so many historic sites to see there- a great way to forget about science for once. Also, I wanted to see how the East is different from Texas and I'm sure there is no better way to find it out than actually going to the East. Along the way to Boston, I’ll be stopping at Atlanta, Georgia, Washington D.C., and New York City, New York.
I’ll be taking this trip with my sister, who has always wanted to go on a road trip. After I came to Austin for college, I didn't get to spend much time with my sister who stayed with my family in El Paso. I thought this trip would not only be a great memory for both of us, but also make the sister-sister bond stronger.
Our first plan was to take this trip on a rental car and take an airplane on the way back. But because my sister and I have not driven long distance before, we decided to fly to Atlanta, Georgia first. Then we’ll rent a car and drive to Boston.
For this trip, I’ll take basic toiletries, four days of worth clothes (because I’ll probably shop), shoes for different occasions, an umbrella (just in case), a pillow, a small blanket, bottled waters and a few snacks. I will also take my camera, laptop, and GPS. I would take lots of pictures so I can forever remember this trip, and with my laptop I will be able to update our trip as we take it. GPS is definitely needed because my sister and I are both not so good when it comes to unfamiliar roads.
This trip will be about a week long, and I think it will cost approximately $1000~1400 (rental car-$413, plane tickets-$388, gas-$55, and rest for food, souvenirs, tickets to attractions). Both my sister and I aren’t so crazy about food, so we are most likely to just stop randomly and grab something to eat. In Atlanta, I have a friend who has kindly agreed to let my sister and I stay at her house. After looking around Washington D.C., we’ll go back to my cousin’s house in Fairfax, Virginia to stay at her house. Fairfax is only about 25 minutes away from Washington D.C. In New York, we also have a friend who lives a block away from the Times Square, and we’ll be staying there. In Boston we’ll stay over at my aunt’s house.
Our plan is to fly to Atlanta on the first day and stay there for two days. We will go to Washington DC by the 3rd day, to New York City by the 5th day, and to Boston by the early morning on the 7th day.
We will arrive in Atlanta around noon. After having a lunch with our friend, we’ll go to the Centennial Olympic Park, where many attractions are nearby. We will go to the CNN center, the World of Coca-Cola, and the Georgia Aquarium. On the second day, we’ll go see a puppet show at the center for puppetry arts. At the CNN center, I’ll be able to have a tour inside and see studios and see broadcasting in action. They supposedly have a world’s tallest escalator. At the World of Coca-Cola, I’ll be able to taste Cokes from all over the world. The Georgia Aquarium is the world’s biggest aquarium, so I hope to see many aquatic animals that I haven’t seen.
In Washington D.C., I’ll go to the Smithsonian Museum, the White House, National memorial park.
In New York City, I am just planning to walk around the Times Square. Because everything is very packed in the New York City, everything is close by. I’ll most likely to go see a Broadway show on the day I get there. On the second day, we’ll go to Hershey’s and M & M’s, and other places that catch our attention. We’ll have a dinner at the Planet Hollywood.
In Boston, I’ll follow through the Freedom Trail. This trail leads to 16 historic sites and is 2.5-mile walk. It starts from Boston common to the Bunker Hill Monument in Charlestown. Some of those are: Bunker Hill Monument, Site of the Boston Massacre, and USS Constitution.
This trip will reflect my definition of a road trip because while I’m taking a break from my studies, I will get to encounter new things. By immersing myself into new and unfamiliar settings, I know this will somehow impact me. I guess the exciting part is that I won’t know how this trip will change me until I’m done taking it.
